The Rhythm Of Life

Are you one of those people that jump out of bed in the morning with an up and at ‘em attitude, a zest for life that would make you a millionaire if only you could bottle it and a clear head that is just itching to get to work on new projects and tackle the forthcoming day?

Or are you the kind of person that thinks mornings are for birds, that anybody functioning on less than 3 cups of coffee is just weird and that finishing off breakfast just before noon is what life is all about?

Either one of those are fine in and of themselves as long as you are functioning properly and getting done what you need to in a day.

I am closer to the second group in so much as I really do not like getting up early in the mornings. Don’t misunderstand me here, when I wake up I am almost always excited by the forthcoming day and looking forward to what I have planned. But the actual act of leaving that nice warm, cozy bed is not one I seem to have ever fully embraced. In fact sometimes I feel as though somebody snuck into my room in the dead of night and glued me to the mattress.

I used to think there was something wrong with me that anybody should be able to function just as well at any time of the day as long as they discipline themselves to do so. In recent years my opinion has changed somewhat. I now no longer try and fight the fact that I am not as energetic if I go to the gym at 9.00am rather than 3.00pm and accept that I write better and think more clearly in the evening. By doing this I no longer feel like I am fighting myself all the time and I am much more likely to have a great workout or come up with a good idea if I am attuned to my bodies needs.

Have you ever stopped to think about your own body and when it is most efficient? Are you fighting yourself on occasions when a simple readjustment of your schedule could provide a quantum shift?

I realize that Society has a habit of imposing expectations upon us in terms of when we work and when we sleep but it is possible to be creative with this from time to time and if that is what is needed to make us feel fitter, more alive and be more productive then surely it is something worth exploring?
