The Most Important Element Of Self Development
About 6 or 7 years ago I had a random blood test for something or other, I forget now.
The upshot was I had a ridiculously high ferritin count.
In effect there was way too much iron coursing around my veins and this is a condition called hemochromatosis.
I always thought I was a man of iron (albeit it very soft iron that bent easily), but this was taking it to extremes.
For the most part hemochromatosis is asymptomatic and usually rears its ugly head in the form of liver or pancreatic cancer, neither of which are very good.
I was pretty lucky it was found.
Actually, I was very, very lucky.
Yes I have to have phlebotomies about 6 times per year to keep the ferritin in check but they are a minor inconvenience in the great scheme of things.
My wife had to go for a dermatology check-up this week and took it upon herself to book me in too.
As a head and neck oncology nurse she’s a bit more aware of such things.
Scaly Sea Monster
Unbeknown to me she was a tad concerned that my head sometimes resembles the scaly sea monster from one of those cartoons I watched as a kid, the name escapes me now. Please do tell me in the comments if you know.
The doctor came in and asked me why I was there. I responded I had no idea other than I have this lumpy mole on one of my love handles that may need checking.
She looked at it and laughed saying it wasn’t a problem, but why I was half naked she should give me the once over.
Usually women run away when I’m half naked, but she seemed keen to do her job, so who was I to argue?
There’s certain people you don’t want scowling and saying ‘that’s interesting’ at the same time.
Your dentist is one, your accountant another and a fucking dermatologist is definitely another.
It seems I have skin cancer on my head, my back and my chest.
Fortunately my feet are absolutely fine and more fortunately it’s not melanoma, but looks more like basal cell in 2 cases and squamous cell carcinoma on my head.
I know have to under go 3 months of chemo cream and probably a few cuts with the lovely term – wide excision.
Afterwards I asked my wife if I’d need a skin graft and after she’d stopped laughing she explained a wide excision would only be about a centimeters and anyway, they were the ones on my back and chest.
There’s not a fat lot of self development going on in this post to date and a lot of self indulgence, so let’s try and put that right.
Self Development Is Useless Without Your Health
It’s no good being the worlds greatest reframer or even Life Coach is they are nailing the lid down on you.
You’re also not much use to your family and loved ones if you’re a bit dead.
I’m 52 in real years, but my head keeps telling me I’m 25 and immortal. I think most of us struggle to accept we’re getting older and our body isn’t quite what it used to be, until something goes wrong.
Taking care of your health such as having screening when it’s offered isn’t being wussy, it isn’t for old folk who struggle to remember who the President is and try to buy a quart of milk with a nickel, and it’s not a waste of time.
I’m not looking for, nor do I want any fucking sympathy. (The ‘fucking’ there was to emphasize the fact!)
It’s highly unlikely to be life threatening now I am getting treatment and there are people going through a lot worse than me.
I have been lucky and I want you to be lucky too.
But for the most part we make our own luck (or in this case my wife made it for me because I doubt I’d have made an appointment this side of my head falling off, and then I’d have not been able to as I wouldn’t have been capable of using phone).
If you’re unsure of something, get it checked out. I know it’s expensive to get treatment in the US, but funerals are expensive too and in any case I want healthy living readers of my blog, not dead ones who almost never hire me or buy my books.

Hi Tim, I really like your website, your approach and you sound like a top man. I am a friend of Gary D ;-) Did you guys go to school together you have many similarities :-) He recommended I get in touch with you with an idea that you could mentor me to be a life coach. I’m a pro Athlete, Dad, public speaker and now 41 years old so open to new ideas.
The main reason why I got in touch is from reading your blog post about your cancer. I have had many friends pass away for a number of reasons, mainly extreme sports but also unexpected degenerative diseases too. As a result one of the companies I now work with makes fruit, vegetable and berry powders that when added to the diet can help increase daily intake of micro and phytonutrients and help protect the body. If it sounds like something you might be interested in, fire me a message. Regardless of that it would be great to have a chat, I think we might get on well :-)
Gary Dunstan do you mean?
I’m good, but I do appreciate the offer, I have quite a few and its very humbling!
The best way to contact me is through the contact page mate.
Well now, I am so glad you are ok. Florida sun – when you take the doggies for walks, do you put block on? Be sure to use block that doesn’t contain bad chems ewg.org
My favorite sea monster as a kid was Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent. Is that who you were thinking of?
Cecil originated on a puppet show called Time For Beanie but that would have been way before your time. (Albert Einstein, Frank Zappa, and Harpo Marx were all fans.) It went on to be the cartoon Beany and Cecil. Maybe you saw that over there in England?
Anyway, I’m sure you’re looking forward to being scale-less. Get well soon!
Ugh! The last thing I’d want is to be immortal, but life would be a heck of a lot easier if we didn’t have to worry about health scares. Just drop dead one day, you know? Glad to hear you caught it when you did. Sending some loving broccoli vibes your way.
Mmmm, lovely thanks Camila!
I’ve been putting off various tests and screenings I need. Reading this inspired me. Calling my doc now. Glad you’re handling your stuff and sharing with us :-)
Good, put them off no longer!
For a few days after hearing about this, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone.
The Law of Attraction may be a load of crap, but I’m sending tons of positive thoughts your way anyway.
Also, the humor on this page is fucking fantastic :D
Thanks a fucking lot!
One of the drawbacks of Florida living Tim,…especially for those of us from a more gentle, if dreary and persistently damp climate!
Gone through a couple of those treatments myself Tim so I’m glad your lovely wife keeps you in check, or makes you have check ups…or whatever. :-)
It was great to meet you in ‘real life’ at the Florida workshop…you are a hoot my friend!
Cheers
Elle
It was great to see you too and I cannot believe I didn’t know you were English!
We’re taking the colony back bit by bit!
Wow, Tim, so scary! I’m very sorry to hear, but also very glad you are keeping such a positive (and hilarious) attitude. And that you have a supportive wife. Good luck!
Thanks and btw, my wife deals with head and neck cancer and basically thinks I should just suck it up and stop whining because Ill be fine ;)
Okay, message received. I’ve been thinking I need to get a skin check and now I am definitely scheduling an appointment. Yikes! So glad you went.
-Tara
Yes do it!
Good tips on how to avoid and detect skin cancer.
I wasn’t sure what you meant and clicked your link.
You may be talking to the wrong guy ;)
Some interesting thoughts here! As a 20-something immortal myself, I know how easy it is to neglect any signs of mortality. But like you say, your health is a fundamental aspect of your personal development, and should be taken care of accordingly!
Indeed mate and I have a bag over my head as I type!
Well bloody hell! I’m definitely not offering any sympathy, f’ing or otherwise, to you, though I suspect Helen may be a worthy recipient of it……
Sort yourself out, get well, if there’s anything you need from Yorkshire (tea? errr – nope, out of ideas) let me know. Now get back to work, we need more Brownson in the world!
Tea??? Ugh I hate the stuff. Some Yorkshire pudding would be nice though. You can fax it over.
My father remarried a woman based in Florida, and being Mr. Home Fix-it he was outside a lot. Yes, skin cancers did have to get cut out of him on a regular basis. I wear so much sunblock some days that I look like I’m in whiteface, but who gives a shit.
I was in my post office last summer and talking about the importance of wearing sunscreen, and a couple people said, “I’m very fair and have never had any problems, so I don’t think that is true.” Uh, right. Because you’ve not had a problem automatically means you’ll never get it.
Dumbasses.
I do a self-scan on the regular, and I spend a shitload of money on sunscreen. It’s so worth it. I keep an eye on all body spots to make sure that freckle isn’t morphing into a cancerous mole.
This post reminds me of why I am such a genius, and why that shitload of money I spend is so, so worth it.
Yep! I can remember somebody telling me that no way could rice be a risky health hazard when reheated because he’d done it lots of times and never got food poisoning.
And I swear to God that I once had an NLP Master Practitioner (and a very good one) tell me smoking wasn’t bad for you that it was a conspiracy.
Again I’m reminded of yet more comedy and a Blackadder sketch where Baldrick says that his uncle had very bad luck with scythes. When questioned further it was because he used them to cut his toenails with.
What? I totally thought you were 25 and immortal. Well fuck, I guess I’ll just have to find another coach.
Love you and glad it’s all good. And yay Helen!! :D
Health issues in any form suck (I’ve had my own share too) and yes, none of it is worth anything without health.
To quote ‘Monty Python and The Holy Grail bring out the your dead’ sketch, “I’m Not Dead Yet!” ;)
Hi Tim,
I have just heard the kind of cancer you dealt with. You are so blessed to meet the right doctor who can treat you. Thank you for inspiring me to strive for good health and keep going through moments of hardship. I hope that now your everyday living becomes increasingly meaningful to others, especially your family, friends and clients. Thanks again for your powerful story!
You’re welcome Yukie and glad you’re doing well!
I love ya, mate!
Thanks man and I’m shunning medical help and using the Law of Attraction and broccoli so I’ll be good to go by about Sunday.
Damn! That was going to be my suggestion. That and a little woo woo, mixed with some evidence-based medicine, and maybe a bit of hand holding.
You’re obviously a wise woman!
Whoa! Scary stuff, definitely could be worse, but hurrah for Helen I say …
Definitely agree health is crucial, if we don’t look after ourselves we’re no use to our loved ones. I’ve had a bit of an obsession recently about death and dying, reading voraciously around the subject – and accepting the inevitability of it for us all, and doing it well when our time comes. Oh and of course helping my elderly father die with dignity was a huge factor. As a qualified nurse and midwife for 35 years I witnessed more than my fair share of human demise at a range of ages. Maybe I could consider becoming a death coach, like Keith’s coaching buddy? Hmmm…
Carpe diem and hope the treatment progresses successfully and as painlessly as possible.
Keith’s coaching buddy?
Do you mean Olivier?
, I have been doing a podcast series with him for almost a year and you obviously haven’t been listening :’-(
Just kidding. He has got a bit of a death obsession and we did have a death midwife on not long ago http://www.rawvoicespodcast.com/the-death-class/
Errrr, actually Sandra, I am not a “death” coach, only Tim’s secret gay lover…but, as I said, it is a secret…
And, don’t worry, we have already scheduled a special podcast episode on http://www.rawvoicespodcast.com with Tim once he is dead (we will obviously use a channeler).
I will be curious to know if they serve beer in Hell…
…
…
Ok fine, I leave
If I was gay, I certainly wouldn’t be hooking up with somebody who pronounces Eckhart Tolle’s name so strangely I spent 15 minutes wondering who the fuck you were talking about to with our guest and scrambling on Google to look this person up!
Haha! Sorry guys, only just seen this thread, obviously didn’t press to get replies to my comment!
And apologies Tim, no I haven’t listened to our podcasts, I’ve been aiming to focus on writing and the website not get too distracted by other ‘shiny’ things. No offence, which I’m sure you haven’t taken anyway.
I’ll check out the death midwife podcast though, interesting. Of course midwives used to bring in life and also perform the death ceremonies. ‘Wise women’ is what we are ;-)
No sympathy Tim – Just glad you’re ok :)
I’m fine and intend staying so, thanks!
